New Orleans Bucket List
If you are visiting New Orleans for the first time or if this is your fifth time, then this is a great list for you. New Orleans is full of fun and exciting things to do. I promise you won’t have to look hard to find some great activities, good food, or refreshing drinks. The city has something for everyone to enjoy. So, let’s get on with the list.
- Stroll around the French Quarter
- Walk Bourbon Street with a drink in hand
- Above all, take a photo in front the oldest church in America, St. Louis Cathedral
- Watch performers in Jackson Square
- Shop for souvenirs at the French Market
- Especially eat benigets at Cafe du Monde
- Then do a little bar hopping in the evening
- Go to the Audubon Aquarium
- See the Katrina exhibits at the Presbytere
- Check out the museum exhibits inside the Cabildo
- Go see the New Orleans Jazz museum at the Old U.S. Mint
- Take a ferry ride to Algiers
- Do a horse drawn carriage ride history tour
- Have drinks at the Carousel Bar (yes, it rotates)
- You should also have a drink at Pirates Alley Bar
- Than take a stroll along the Mississippi River
- See if you can catch the ghost at Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar
- Check out all the neat stuff inside the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum
- See the Historic New Orleans Collection
- See a show at the House of Blues New Orleans
- Of course do some window shopping on Royal Street
- Have coffee at French Truck Coffee House
- Without a doubt, you should have Breakfast at Ruby Slipper Cafe
- Have a Hurrican at Pat O’Briens
- Get a Hand Granade at Tropical Isle
- See the sinister Madame La Laurie Mansion, also take pictures
- Check out Madame John’s Legacy
- See what a real 1850 house looked like at the 1850 House
- Go inside the Gallier House
- Explore the 19th-Century Creole Mansion and Slave Quarters at the Hermann-Grimma House
- Visit the Museum of Death
- Ask questions inside the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum
- Head down to Preservation Hall
- Go to Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo at least once
- Check out the Old Ursuline Convent
- Make sure you see where Marie Laveau’s house was
- Try to capture some spirits on camera at the Andrew Jackson Hotel
- Eat some delicious Bread Pudding at Olde NOLA Cookery
- Get a Blood Bag cocktail at New Orleans Vampire Cafe
- See a show at the Saenger Theater
- Experience Mardi Gras
- See the National WWII Museum
- Take a Creole or Cajun cooking class
- Certainly head over to Mardi Gras World if you can’t experience the real thing
- Ride the Mississippi on a Steamboat
- See a West Indies-style home at the Pitot House
- Check out the Ogden Museum of Southern Art
- Coupled with a game, concert, or event
- See the Southern Food & Beverage Museum
- Visit the Spanish Plaza
- Occasionally shop at the Riverwalk Outlet
- Also Wonder around the New Orleans Jazz National Historic Park
- Eat a Po-boy
- Check out the art at Degas House
- Walk Frenchman Street for some live street Jazz
- Occasionally, ride the St. Charles streetcar (the oldest running trolley line in the world)
- See all the beautiful mansions in the Garden District, while enjoying the atmosphire
- Head over to the Audubon Zoo
- Take out a boat on Lake Pontchartrain
- See the alligators on a Swamp Tour, surprisingly fascinating
- Picnic at Audubon Park
- Once in a while, read a book at Crescent Park
- Obviously eat some Jambalaya
- Tour the Whitney Plantation
- Go on a Cemetery Tour
- Ride bikes at the City Park whenever you can, endless views
- See the art at NOMA
- Stroll through the Besthoff Sculpture Garden straightaway
- Regardless, take a night & do a Ghost/Vampire/True Crime Tour.
- See Marie Laveau’s Tomb
- Take a History Tour
- Munch on a Food Tour
- Smell the roses at the New Orleans Botanical Gardens
- Go see the Canal Lighthouse
- Have a moment of silence at the Hurricane Katrina Memorial
- Also go see the Chalmette Battlefield & National Cemetery
- Hike around the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve
- Eventually eat some good Gumbo
- Tour the Oak Alley Plantation
- Also take a tour through St. Louis Cemetery #1
- Walk through Lafayette Cemetery #1 (where many movies were filmed)
- Walk Magazine Street
- Try your luck at Harrah’s Casino, so you can say you’ve gambled
- Walk through Louis Armstrong Park
- Head over to Congo Square
- Get scared at The Mortuary Haunted House,
Honestly, there is so much more to do. If this is your first time going to New Orleans, I recommend doing a few tours and then relax and see what you can find. The City Park alone is full of fun things to do. I promise you will want to start planning that second trip once you get home.
